4 Photos from Salerno

The "4 Photos" series takes four frames and nothing else. This time it's the Italian port city most travelers rush past on the way to Positano.

Aerial view of Salerno and its coastline on the Gulf of Salerno
Salerno curves along its gulf at the start of the Amalfi Coast.

Salerno is where the Amalfi Coast road starts. Ferries run from its harbor to Amalfi and Positano, and most visitors only see it from the dock. That's a shame. The city has a long seafront promenade, a medieval old town and a cathedral with more than 900 years of history.

The "4 Photos" format is simple: four frames that together give you the feel of a place. Here they are, each with a caption.

The lungomare1/4
The lungomare Salerno's seafront promenade runs for more than a kilometer. At night the lights of the whole bay come on.
Old-town rooftops2/4
Old-town rooftops Terracotta roofs pack the centro storico between the hills and the sea.
Duomo bells3/4
Duomo bells The cathedral of San Matteo, consecrated in the 11th century, still marks the hours over the old town.
Castello di Arechi4/4
Castello di Arechi The medieval castle watches over the city from the ridge above the harbor.

If you go

  • Getting there: Salerno is on Italy's main high-speed rail line, a short ride south of Naples.
  • Base yourself here: Hotels cost less than on the coast, and ferries leave from the harbor for Amalfi, Positano and beyond.
  • Walk the lungomare at sunset. It's what everyone in town does.
  • Visit the Duomo of San Matteo and its crypt, then get lost in the alleys of the centro storico.
